The Columbia County IDA not only voted this morning to reject Kohl's and Widewaters' latest grab for tax breaks... According to economic development officials, the IDA also made it clear that Widewaters should not return for this or similar projects which could not qualify. With hope, this sets a precedent that non-industrial retailers who offer goods and services already available in the County should not pester the IDA.
This comes on the heels of news that Kohl's has already filed for a building permit with the Town of Greenport. The temper tantrum by Marco Marzocchi in this morning's Register notwithstanding, many suspect that the store will eventually build here. Companies like Kohl's will typically push to get as many goodies as possible, and have the in-house resources to try. But if this location is really so desirable to them, the PILOT was just gravy. Good for the IDA for calling their bluff; and if they don't come, well, somehow people have survived in this County for hundreds of years without 'em.
As a coda to the whole affair, check out Dave Colby's excellent op-ed responding to Al Wassenhove, a self-appointed cheerleader for all bottom-feeding, non-locally owned corporations.
