The Daily Mail reported yesterday that since changing the name of their St. Lawrence Cement plant in Catskill in 2008, Holcim has racked up 310 safety and other violations. The related fines totaled some $455,000, though the company has negotiated some of those down and is contesting others:
The company's appalling track record was among the issues flagged by the Valley Alliance in comments on the draft Hudson LWRP. Holcim has an atrocious record nationally and internationally of pollution violations, worker injuries and deaths, and price-fixing. So these new fines come as little surprise, though they are no less troubling for being unsurprising.
But track record problems were not reported to the Aldermen by company boosters City Attorney Cheryl Roberts or BFJ planner Frank Fish in any of three recent meetings ostensibly about the public input received.
