Some Columbia County Democratic Committee nominees are reportedly struggling to get their names on the ballot for November. Party officials put out a distress call this week, desperately re-nagging committee members to get signatures on designating petitions which are due July 12th. The petitioning process began on June 5th.
According to several inside sources, candidates such as State Assembly wannabe Cheryl Roberts, who faces a likely primary against Rensselaer County Democrat Keith Hammond, were lacking as many as 300 signatures needed to reach their goal at the beginning of the week.
Presumably the Committee will eke these signatures out. But any candidate who comes too close to the minimum number required exposes themselves to potential challenges, as often petition-gatherers and signers make mistakes (e.g. with illegible or ineligible names).
