Last Thursday afternoon, The Register-Star posted a headline which, contrary to its own reporting, rendered a definitive (and damning) verdict on the conduct of a driver involved in a fatal accident. A post here questioned the wisdom of the paper jumping to a stark conclusion that would likely have to be assessed by a court. And by the next morning, the paper had tempered the headline substantially, describing the tragic event more neutrally both in its online and print editions.
Yet today, when the daily Register’s sister weekly paper The Chatham Courier reposted the same story, the Courier reinstated the original, starkly condemnatory headline.
